#LetsTalk: State of mind

This week I'll be talking about something a lot closer to home. As the new year approaches, I cant help but think of the battles I faced with my mind this year. Many may not know, but like the title suggests, yes, Depression. Like me, many others suffered or still suffer in silence. This week I learnt of the passing of yet another inspirational woman, due to a successful attempt of suicide and it deeply shook me. Although slightly unsure of how many individuals this blog post may help, I plan to discuss this issue as briefly as I can, with the hopes of encouraging those who currently are fighting the battle against their own minds.

Depression is defined as a common mental disorder, characterized by sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, feelings of tiredness, and poor concentration (WHO, 2014). There are 3 forms of depression ranging from Mild to Moderate to Severe. It tends to be long lasting and most times the victims are very good at hiding the signs, hence why its very difficult to help those who suffer.

In some cases it lead to suicide. This is when then depressed individual feels completely hopeless and sees death as the only option. The only option in an attempt to escape the painful thoughts that travel through their minds.

Depression in my experience is mind and body draining, it consumes you gradually, till you see no way of escape. The illustration above is a perfect example.
As an individual dealing or battling with this, you may sometimes experience;
  • Feeling insignificant
  • Feeling Worthless
  • Loneliness
  • Neglected
  • Afraid
  • Heavyhearted
  • Loss of interest in life
  • And sorrowful (sometimes for no real reason), Just to name a few .

Facts you need to understand

(Firstly, understand that, a fact is something that is known or proved to be true. You don't need to doubt these !!)
  • Jesus cares -1 Peter 5v 7 - Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.

  • He wants to help and wants you to be happy and strengthened-Isaiah 41 v10 - Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

  • He is the One person who can understand exactly how we feel - Hebrews 4 vs. 15 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin."

  • You CAN talk to someone ( people aren't as judgemental as your mind may lead you to believe)
You may try to console yourself with thoughts like "someday someone will look at me like I'm the best thing in the world" and then you ask "when will that day come"
Truth is someone already does.. For a fact He thought much more than that. He went as far as to give up His life just so that you can LIVE yours freely.
Death is not an option !!! He can give you rest (Matthew 11 v 28 "Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest")

I cant emphasize this enough but do you know that even in the late night hour, when you are suddenly reminded of your "situations" and stressors ?. When its so quiet that finally doubt and anxiety decide to play games in your mind. Be assured that even through the pain, the tears, the anxiety and breathlessness, that Joy comes in the morning #Guaranteed (Psalm 30 vs. 5). I encourage you today, no matter how hard it seems, to communicate with Him. He longs to hear you and listen to your worries no matter how "irrelevant" you think they are. He wants to bring you peace and embrace you with His love.

For His anger is but for a moment,
His favor is for life;
Weeping may endure for a night,
But joy comes in the morning.-Psalm 30 vs.5

Thank you for reading !!
